Monthly Orbit: February
new hyperfixations just dropped!!!
Welcome to my February Orbit, where I share all the media and moments I’ve enjoyed over the past month! February has been fun; including a trip to Amsterdam, lots of films, Lana’s new song on repeat, getting obsessed with the sauna, and an incredible, life-changing bell hooks essay. I’ll talk about the films, music, TV, food, drinks, and books I’ve loved this month, as well as some life updates and highlights. Enjoy! ☄︎₊˚⊹☆
☆ FILMS I WATCHED ☆
The films I watched this month do not (I repeat: DO NOT) reflect my film taste!! I got on a bit of a Twilight hype, and the DVDs of both Breaking Dawn films arrived the other day so I can’t wait to see this shitshow through for the hundredth time. I made the important switch from Team Edward to Team Jacob, but after rewatching their bizarre first kiss scene in Eclipse where he threatens to literally kill himself if she doesn’t choose him, I’ve decided that the only decent man in the whole franchise is Charlie.
Here’s every film I watched this month, in the order that I watched them:
Hamnet ★★★
Sentimental Value (second time watching this masterpiece) ★★★★½
United 93 ★★★ ½
Twilight: New Moon ★★★★
The Perfect Neighbour (It feels weird / wrong to rate true crime because I actually fundamentally disagree with it as entertainment. I think this documentary, even though I agree with the core of what it’s saying, was particularly voyeuristic)
Burlesque ★★★ ½
Twilight: Eclipse ★★★★
Beastly ★
Panic Room ★★½
The Guilty ★★★★ (the Danish original NOT the Jake Gyllenhaal version)
“Wuthering Heights” ★★★
Pitch Perfect ★★★★★ (I totally and unironically think this is a perfect piece of ART)
☆ MUSIC I LOVED ☆
I’ve had to limit myself to listening to Lana’s new song once a day because ‘whoopsie-daisy yoo-hoo’ is constantly going round in my head and it’s starting to get annoying.
Here are the songs I’ve had on repeat this month:
White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter - Lana Del Rey
Emily - Joanna Newsom (one of my favourite songs of all time)
House featuring John Cale - Charli xcx
Silver Jubilee - Audrey Hobert
Paris, Texas - Lana Del Rey
Hot Knife - Fiona Apple
☆ WHAT I READ ☆
The best thing I read all month was an essay by bell hooks called ‘Women Artists: The Creative Process’ from her collection ‘Art on My Mind: Visual Politics.’ She talks about the necessity of isolation when creating art, and how women are rarely afforded this luxury. It resonated sooo much with me in terms of the guilt I often feel about taking time to be creative whilst there are other things (and, tbh, people) that need my attention.
[I continue these thoughts on the politics of prioritising yourself as a woman, and how to actually do what you want, for my lovely lovely lovely paid subscribers!! I talk about what I’ve been eating and drinking this month, and what I’ve been up to in general, diving a little deeper my life atm. If you’d like to have access to all this (and the entire archive of paid posts!) it’s the price of one teeny tiny coffee and you’ll be helping to support my writing, which means a lotttt ☄︎₊˚⊹☆]
